Red Valley & Ozkonak Underground City

The adventure begins!

Today, we step away from the crowds and dive into the untouched beauty of Cappadocia. This tour is for true explorers—those who wish to hike through stunning landscapes, uncover ancient cave churches, and venture into the depths of an underground city.

Red Valley – Hiking Through a Land of Fire and Stone

We start our day with an unforgettable hike in the Red Valley, one of Cappadocia’s most striking landscapes. The valley gets its name from the deep red hues of the volcanic rock, which shift colors under the morning sun. As we walk along its winding trails, we pass through hidden rock tunnels, ancient dwellings, and cave chapels, each revealing a different chapter of history. The silence of the valley is broken only by the soft crunch of our footsteps and the occasional whisper of the wind.

Cross Church – A Hidden Gem in the Rocks

Nestled deep within the valley, the Cross Church awaits. This rock-carved chapel, adorned with intricate crosses etched into its walls, was a place of worship for monks who once sought solitude in these lands. As we step inside, we imagine the flickering candlelight that once illuminated these sacred halls, where prayers echoed through the stone.

Çavuşin Village – A Town Frozen in Time

Our next stop takes us to Çavuşin, a village that feels like a time capsule. The old rock houses, carved into the cliffs, tell tales of the people who lived here centuries ago. Some structures remain intact, while others have been shaped by time and nature, creating an eerie yet mesmerizing sight. We take a moment to absorb the atmosphere, imagining life in this cave-dwelling community.

St. John the Baptist Church – A Testament to Faith

High above the village, we reach St. John the Baptist Church, one of the largest and oldest rock-cut churches in Cappadocia. Its towering structure and faded frescoes hint at its significance in early Christianity. As we stand inside, we feel the weight of history pressing down on us, the stories of pilgrims and worshippers still lingering in the air.

Özkonak Underground City – Descending into the Depths

For our final adventure, we head underground—literally. The Özkonak Underground City is a vast labyrinth of tunnels, rooms, and passageways carved deep into the earth. Used as a refuge during times of invasion, this hidden city is a masterpiece of ancient engineering. As we explore its narrow corridors, ventilation shafts, and rolling stone doors, we experience firsthand what it must have been like to seek shelter beneath the surface, waiting for danger to pass.

Return to Hotel & End of the Journey

As we drive back, we reflect on a day of discovery. From the fiery landscapes of Red Valley to the ancient sanctuaries of Çavuşin, and the mysterious underground world of Özkonak, this journey has taken us through the very soul of Cappadocia.
